Chapter 10

Enter Pixie Khumalo

If my story seems unusual so far, it is going to become even more unusual.

Dad received a phone call at work one morning during 2003. A lady by the name of Mrs Khumalo explained that she was a social worker with the South African Police Service and apparently I had been assigned to her. To this day, we have no idea how she got hold of Dad’s number or even how she came to know about me.

Dad came home that evening and told Mom that a Mrs Khumalo had made contact with him and that she wanted to come and see us as a family.

Mom told Aunt Toots about this and explained that the visit could be made to them. We all awaited Mrs Khumalo’s visit.

Strangely enough she never came. Dad never heard from her again. The good that came out of this phone call was my Mom’s invention of Pixie Khumalo. I am not sure why Mom did this, but she “invented” a best friend for me, who was Pixie. The idea was that Pixie was Mrs Khumalo’s daughter. The stories began and Mom would tell not only me but also the cousins and the family about Pixie. Pixie had just turned 21 and worked in one of the Government departments. Her father had been a part of the struggle and she had grown up during this time. She was now employed and held a very prestigious job in the Government. Pixie knew Uncle Madiba very well and had a good relationship with him.

She resided in Ballito in a mansion and only drove around in a limousine. Years later she became Dame Pixie Khumalo after she thwarted a SASSA card fraud scheme. There are just so many stories, but I think Mom can write her own book one day and tell the stories. My family loves Dame Pixie and even my second cousin, Dee, to this day always asks Mom to tell her what Dame Pixie is up to and what happened to her in certain situations. The highlight of my “friendship” is a song Mom wrote for Dame Pixie.
